If I had to pick just three things that shaped my career the most, it’s not the Billboard charts, or the tours, or even the albums. It’s the stuff I was doing long before any of that ever happened. And I think these are things you can grab onto in your own journey—whether you’re building music, a business, or anything that matters to you.
1. Consistency beats talent alone
Back in high school, I was the kid carrying my saxophone home every single day—blocks and blocks, heavy case in my hands. Everyone else left theirs in the band room. Not me. I’d get home and practice for hours, even when I didn’t feel like it.
That consistency is what set me apart. Not talent. Not shortcuts. Just showing up again and again.
Ask yourself: what’s the one thing you’re committed to showing up for every single day?
2. Build your own audience—don’t wait for permission
When I first got to Los Angeles, I sent demo after demo to labels and managers. And guess what? Nobody cared. Doors weren’t slammed in my face. They just didn’t open at all.
The real turning point came when I stopped waiting on gatekeepers and started building my own audience. Playing shows. Collecting emails. Finding ways to connect directly. That’s what gave me leverage, and honestly, it’s still what gives me freedom today.
👉 In your world—are you waiting on someone’s approval, or are you building your own lane?
3. Relationships can carry you farther than any single song
I’ve been blessed to share stages with some of my heroes—George Duke, Marcus Miller, Paul Jackson Jr., Kirk Whalum, and so many more. But those moments didn’t just come from grinding alone. They came from relationships. From showing up, respecting artists and their music, and putting in the work just like them.
It’s true in music, and it’s true anywhere: doors open through people.
Who’s one person you can build with this month—not just for what they can do for you, but for the journey you can take together?
Those three things—consistency, building your own audience, and relationships—changed everything for me. And honestly, if I had to start over tomorrow, those are the same three I’d double down on.
What about you? What’s been the biggest difference-maker in your journey so far?
Talk to me.
