Jackiem
Joyner

Some stories are played. Others are written. His life has become both.

A life shaped by music and imagination

An artist is more than the instrument he plays.

The Beginning

A dream worth staying for.

Born in Virginia and raised in Syracuse, New York, Jackiem Joyner learned early that a dream could ask as much of a person as it promised. At sixteen, when his mother returned to Virginia, he chose to remain in Syracuse to finish high school. He took responsibility for the family apartment, worked to pay the bills, and helped care for his younger brother, who was also in school.

Some shifts ended so late that he rode his bicycle home in the early morning, then returned to school for a seven o’clock start. There were no guarantees. But there was a decision to finish what he had begun.

AN EARLY CHAPTER IN SYRACUSE

From the archives

Before the world heard him.

Before recording contracts and international audiences, Joyner was already making music in Syracuse. This newspaper clipping captures a young saxophonist in the years when his ambitions were taking shape—while he was also working, attending school, and finding his own way forward.

The image is more than a keepsake. It is a glimpse of the beginning.

Finding His Voice

From a local stage to a world of sound.

As a student at Fowler High School, Joyner competed in the NAACP ACT-SO program and represented Syracuse nationally. What began as a love of the saxophone steadily became a life’s direction.

After graduating in 1999, he continued developing his sound. Touring with contemporary jazz keyboardists Marcus Johnson and Bobby Lyle between 2001 and 2004 introduced him to the demands of a professional stage and the audiences waiting beyond his hometown.

The music moved. The world listened.

His 2007 debut, Babysoul, introduced a solo recording artist with a distinctive melodic voice. Over the following years, the saxophonist, producer, and composer built a catalog of radio favorites and took his music to audiences across the United States and internationally.

The Recording Artist

A sound of his own.

Three Billboard No. 1 hits, eight Top Five singles, and performances in more than thirty countries tell part of the story. Joyner’s career also includes collaborations with renowned artists such as Najee, Angela Bofill, Keiko Matsui, Peter White, Jean Carne, Ronnie Laws, and George Duke.

But the numbers only hint at what listeners recognize: the emotional directness of his playing, and a musician who approaches a melody as something with a beginning, a turn, and a destination.

Beyond the Stage

The same imagination that shaped a melody began building entire worlds.

The Author

Stories waiting backstage.

Joyner didn’t set out to become a novelist. While touring, he began recording stray ideas in an Evernote app as he waited for soundchecks. The notes grew into characters, then plots, then entire imagined worlds. Writing became a new way to follow the same creative instinct that had long guided his music.

His books now span science fiction, suspense, time-travel mystery, and personal growth, including the Zarya series, Minor Assassin, TimeLab, and Bold Moves. The first Zarya novel earned a Silver Literary Titan Award.

Passing It Forward

The art of earning. The art of becoming.

The lessons of his own journey also inform Joyner’s work with young people and independent artists. Through workshops, school visits, masterclasses, and creative conversations, he brings musical craft together with the practical realities of building a career in the arts.

His educational initiatives include Artist Career Mastery and Tune Into Digital, programs focused on helping artists understand today’s industry, develop direct relationships with audiences, and build greater creative independence. The goal is bigger than teaching technique: helping others imagine a sustainable future doing meaningful work.

Education and Community

A life in the arts can become a way to open doors for someone else.

Coming Home

A city remembers its own.

In August 2010, the Syracuse Common Council unanimously adopted a resolution honoring Joyner’s achievements and welcoming him home. Fourteen years later, the city recognized an even broader creative journey: on August 29, 2024, Mayor Ben Walsh proclaimed Jackiem Joyner Day in Syracuse.

The proclamation acknowledged his contributions not only to recorded music and live performance, but also to literature, arts education, and his continuing connection to the community where so much of his story took shape.
