Building a home studio\nis exciting. If you are looking to record and produce your own music at home,\nit is easier than ever before. A lot of equipment has become cheaper and the\nfact that modern computers are so powerful, and can act as a hub for your\nmusic, means that you can have a professional audio setup in the comfort of\nyour home. If you have a spare room or even a garage, it is possible that you\ncan set up a home studio with relative ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We don\u2019t all have a\nhuge amount of money to spend, and you should be able to build your home studio\nfor a lower price tag than ever before, but there are still plenty of things\nyou shouldn\u2019t skimp on when you are building the studio. Some things simply\ncannot be bought on the cheap, and if you try to get away with low-end gear, it\nwill impact every piece of music that is made in the studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, which are the\nitems you should prioritize spending your money on?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speakers\/Monitors\nand Headphones<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your speakers (or monitors)<\/a> and headphones are naturally how you interact\nwith the audio which is being made in your studio. Poor quality monitors mean\nyou simply will not be able to accurately hear what is going on. It is like an\nartist having obscured vision while painting, and there is no way to create a\nhigh-quality mix if you\u2019re listening on $5 earbuds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, don’t be afraid,\nyou can still get a decent pair of headphones at a\nreasonable price<\/a>. The\nATH-M20Xs by Audio Technica are an excellent choice (at around $50) if you’re\nlooking for a cheap (but good) studio headphones<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You need a full and\naccurate representation of all of the audio frequencies from 20 Hz to 20kHz.\nThis means that some speakers are not suitable. For instance, a speaker which\nboosts the bass may sound good while you are producing, but if they are doing\nso by boosting certain frequencies then you might end up with terrible sounding\nmusic when you switch to a \u2018flat\u2019 frequency response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Computer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your computer may not\nbe specifically a \u2018music\u2019 piece of equipment, but it is vitally important for your\nhome studio<\/a>. Unless you\nplan to go the \u2018retro\u2019 route and record to tape, the computer is going to be\nthe central hub of your home studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Picture the scene;\nyou\u2019ve just finished a perfect take on guitar, you stop recording and… the\ncomputer crashes. This nightmare scenario becomes far more likely if you skimp\non the computer which will be running the studio. Music software doesn\u2019t tend\nto go easy on the RAM and certainly not on the memory of a computer. Whether\nyou are using Mac or PC to run your home studio<\/a>, it is vital that you use something with\nplenty of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luckily, your computer\ncan be used for plenty of other stuff, so it isn\u2019t just an investment for your\nstudio. You may even wish to purchase a laptop which can simply be plugged into\nthe rest of your studio when you need, and you can then use it to produce, do\nwork or even complete your taxes or write on your blog when you are out and\nabout!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you do need to save\nmoney, it could be worth looking into a product which has been manufacturer\nrefurbished. It is not always the best way to do so, but sometimes you can save\na lot of money and still get a manufacturer warranty on the item. Apple, for\ninstance, do this with a lot of their Mac computers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audio\nInterface<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your audio interface is how your computer will interact with microphones and other instruments. An excellent interface is required<\/a>, especially if you\u2019re going to be doing a lot of recording in the home studio. This means that you shouldn\u2019t just go out and buy the cheapest interface out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audio interfaces allow\nyou to plug in instruments directly via jack-to-jack cables or to plug in\nmicrophones using XLR cables. You can control the gain, and even send phantom\npower to the microphone you are using, which can be handy if you plan to record\nvia a condenser microphone. Some interfaces also let you record multiple things\nat once, for instance, you could record your singing through a mic and guitar\nat the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An audio interface\nwhich isn\u2019t good enough can mean that the audio signal is compromised or not\ncarried with enough quality and clarity to be used in professional recordings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If an audio interface\nis not going to provide enough inputs, you may need to opt for a mixing desk.\nIf you need to do so, this is another item you should not skimp on due to the\nfact that a poor-quality desk can carry audio signal badly and cause\ninterference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Microphones<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Microphones cause some\ndebate among the world of music technology and home studios. This is especially\ntrue when it comes to cost. Truthfully, there are some very good microphones<\/a> available at a really low price (comparative\nto other music gear, at least). SM58 and SM57 microphones by Shure have been\nindustry standard for many years and can be picked up for around $100. This\ncertainly isn\u2019t hugely expensive by musical standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, what we mean\nwhen we tell people not to skimp on microphones is to not get drawn in by some\nof the super cheap items which are on the market. Some microphones can be\npicked up for $10. This is unbelievably cheap, and the chances are, for this\nprice you are not going to get a microphone with any decent level of clarity.\nThese mics might be fine for a skype chat, but don\u2019t expect to record to any\nsort of professional level with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, musical\nequipment is rarely cheap. Though it has become more affordable, a home studio\nhas a lot of components and you will have to spend if you want to make a\nprofessional sounding piece of music within your own home.
