It&#8217;s possible to skip the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalancecareers.com\/what-is-a-music-demo-and-why-do-i-need-one-2460501\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">demo<\/a>\u00a0step and go straight to recording an album, but that&#8217;s not the answer for everyone.\u00a0Consider the following two scenarios, and see which one fits you best.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-1\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\n<div id=\"mntl-block_2-0\" class=\"comp mntl-block\">\n<div id=\"billboard1-sticky-dynamic_1-0\" class=\"comp billboard1-sticky-dynamic billboard-sticky--sc scads-to-load right-rail__item billboard-sticky scads-stick-in-parent scads-ad-placed\" data-height=\"1050\">\n<div class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-2\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-heading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">Case One: You Want a Record Label Deal\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-3\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html \">\n<p>If your goal is getting signed to a label, then a demo is in order. Demos allow labels to hear your music and see what you&#8217;re all about. Your demo can be physical (an actual CD to send out) or digital, depending on the preferences of the label you&#8217;re approaching. That said, a demo is never going to get you signed to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalancecareers.com\/big-three-record-labels-2460743\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">major label<\/a>, or almost never. Your demo may end up in the hands of an A&amp;R person with a major label which may help you get your foot in the door, but you&#8217;re not going to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalancecareers.com\/record-a-music-demo-2460396\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">record a demo<\/a>, package it up,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalancecareers.com\/how-to-send-a-music-demo-to-record-labels-2460402\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\">send off your demo to the label<\/a>, and get &#8220;discovered.&#8221; First off, they won&#8217;t accept your demo for legal reasons\u2014the possibility you might accuse them of ripping off your songs in the future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-4\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\n<div id=\"mntl-block_3-0\" class=\"comp mntl-block\">\n<div id=\"billboard2-sticky-dynamic_1-0\" class=\"comp billboard2-sticky-dynamic billboard-sticky--sc scads-to-load right-rail__item billboard-sticky scads-ad-placed\" data-height=\"600\">\n<div class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-5\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html mntl-sc-block-html-sliced \">\n<p class=\"html-slice\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalancecareers.com\/signing-with-an-indie-label-2460744\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"4\">Indie labels<\/a>\u00a0are the ones that are, by and large, approachable with demos.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-6\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\n<div id=\"mntl-block_4-0\" class=\"comp mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-7\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-heading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">Why Not Record and Send an Album?<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-8\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html \">\n<p>That&#8217;s a possibility, but it&#8217;s not ideal because it&#8217;s expensive. A demo can be recorded for much less than a release ready record, and it&#8217;s a cheap, easy way to pursue your goal of getting a record deal. Some people do believe that your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalancecareers.com\/do-i-need-a-professionally-recorded-demo-2460678\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">demo should be professionally recorded<\/a>, but labels understand what demos are and don&#8217;t expect them to be release ready.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-9\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-10\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html \">\n<p>If you have a bit of a following already and think you could sell some albums, investing in recording before scoring a deal makes more sense, but this can be a catch-22 situation that needs careful management. If you get lots of reviews on your self-released album and sell lots of copies, labels will think twice about signing it as the promotion opportunities have already been used up, and many of the fans have already bought it. Even if the label wants to work with you, you&#8217;ll need a new album.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-11\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-12\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html mntl-sc-block-html-sliced \">\n<p class=\"html-slice\">\u00a0If you&#8217;re just getting started and you really want label backing, the demo is a better investment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-13\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\n<div id=\"mntl-block_5-0\" class=\"comp mntl-block\">\n<div id=\"native-placeholder_2-0\" class=\"comp native-placeholder mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-14\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-heading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">Case Two: You Want to Self-Release Your Record<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-15\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html \">\n<p>If you&#8217;ve decided to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalancecareers.com\/how-to-start-a-record-label-2460782\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">become your own record label<\/a>, then a demo isn&#8217;t what you need. After all, you&#8217;re the label\u2014you&#8217;ve signed yourself! If you&#8217;re going to sell an album, quality recording methods are critical, which isn&#8217;t the case with demos. You can still record at home cheaply if you have the know-how, but you&#8217;ll need to turn out a &#8220;release quality&#8221; record.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-16\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\n<div id=\"mntl-block_6-0\" class=\"comp mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-17\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html \">\n<p>Even if you don&#8217;t have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalancecareers.com\/find-music-distribution-2460722\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">distribution<\/a>\u00a0or you plan on using your album to get gigs or press before a formal release date, you can still skip the demo as long as you&#8217;re married to the finished product. What you really need at this stage is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalancecareers.com\/what-is-a-music-promo-and-do-you-need-one-2460612\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">promo<\/a>, which is simply a copy of your finished album as it will sound when released. On a demo, songs may be works in progress.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-18\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\n<div id=\"mntl-block_7-0\" class=\"comp mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-19\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html \">\n<p>There is some crossover for demos and promos, no matter what your end game is. Both can be used to try\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalancecareers.com\/how-to-get-a-gig-a-musician-s-guide-to-booking-concerts-2460375\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">to get gigs<\/a>\u00a0or to find a manager, an agent, or a promoter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-20\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\">\n<div id=\"mntl-block_8-0\" class=\"comp mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-21\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-heading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">Label vs. Self-Release: Pros and Cons<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-22\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html \">\n<p>There are benefits to being on a label as even a small label will have distribution, relationships with the media, networks with promoters, and experience. Labels also take some of the financial burdens off of the band. On the other hand, making a run at releasing your own record requires money, patience, determination, and hard work. In exchange, you&#8217;ll be in the driver&#8217;s seat when it comes to your music.
